Very Rare & Authentic WW2 RAF Operations Room Sector clock

This is an original Air Ministry screen printed dial timepiece. These mechanical clocks were not all actively used in operations rooms and many were issued to RAF bases. The reason being , wartime Britain had many enemies within the country. So stations other than frontline command air defence were issued with sector clocks as just purely decorative timepieces to be used as a subterfuge/disguise. (This is why main air defence system clocks which were electric slave units supplied under GPO contract differ slightly from the mechanical clocks)  The best way to hide Dowdings brilliant system was to openly display it as the clocks had little relevance without plotting tables and system.

(100% genuine & highly prized - assessment by leading authority with written provenance - not a repainted white dial/faked clock face as often advertised/sold-please see Blog!)

Type 1 ELLIOTT dated 1943, Chain fusee pendulum movement - fully serviced - an amazing ww2 artifact in wonderful cond.

The clock face is marked with five-minute red, yellow and blue triangular segments.[4] It has an outer 12-hour ring and an inner 24-hour dial.

Aircraft position was recorded along with the colour of the triangle beneath the minute hand at the time of sighting. This was reported to sector headquarters, where counters of the relayed colour were used to represent each air raid on a large table with a map of the UK overlaid with a British Modified Grid. As the plots of the raiding aircraft moved, the counters were pushed across the map by magnetic "rakes". This system enabled "Fighter Controllers" to see very quickly where each formation was heading and allowed an estimate to be made of possible targets. The age of the information was readily apparent from the colour of the counter. Because of the simplicity of the system, decisions could be made quickly and easily. An iconic piece of British wartime heritage and history.

Sector clock or colour change clock was a round colour-coded clock used at military airfields and observation posts in the United Kingdom to help track the movements of enemy aircraft and control friendly aircraft. It took enemy aircraft approximately 20 minutes to get from France to their targets in London and up to 4 minutes for this news to reach the operations room. As it took squadrons of Spitfires and Hurricanes 14-16 minutes to get up to 20,000 feet this left between 30 seconds and two minutes to make each crucial decision. .
